#0 On Computers

Do computers have a soul? Can computers even possess a soul and have a distinguishing capacity for desire, pleasure and pain?

Humans may never know if plants can even feel pain, or even have thoughts of there own. And without thought, how could one have a soul. The Venus flytrap, surely provides itself with nutrition by trapping prey in their leafs. It may seem to use a thought process to trap the prey. Or it may very well be organically programmed to collapse whenever censor cells feel something. That does not mean that the Venus Flytrap has thoughts or a soul.   Like a plant, computers are programmed to do certain tasks when an event or condition presents itself, and the computer reacts by doing a computation.

If distinguishing capacity for desire to live, have pleasure, pain, and thoughts means one would have a soul, then i don't believe computers have a soul. Of course there's differences in opinions. Most people would feel guilty about cutting a dog over a plant like a tree any day. But their are people in this world who think plants have souls and feelings as well. So with that said I'm sure their are people who think computers have souls as well.

AI can certainly make it seem like someone is talking to you, for example, in a chat room. But that "person" could actually be a program that is analyzing what you say and might actually respond to your thoughts like a human. Human emulation is simple if the AI program knows what to do when it has laundry-list of things to say. The day humans can create an AI algorithm that is able to create ORIGINAL thought, not something that's programmed, then i truly think that may be the day that humans created a soul.
